You get a classic, stable keelboat, a guide who knows these waters, and a half or full day on the calm East End bays. Whether you want to learn the ropes or just enjoy the sail, the captain handles as much or as little as you like. 

Let's start with the boat, because it is a good one. The Pearson Ensign was designed by Carl Alberg and first built in 1962. It became one of the most popular one-design keelboats in North America, with more than 1,700 built, and it is still in production today. That staying power is no accident. The design is simple, sturdy, and fun to sail. Sailors have raced and cruised the Ensign for more than 60 years. When you step aboard, you are sailing a piece of American sailing history that still holds up beautifully.

What makes it such a good day-sailer?

A few things. The Ensign has a full keel with about 1,200 pounds of ballast, so it stays steady even when the wind picks up. It carries one of the largest open cockpits of any boat its size, which means real room for your group. It seats up to six people in comfort, and there is a head in the small cabin. The boat weighs around 3,000 pounds, heavy enough to feel solid, light enough to move nicely in a light breeze. For a day on protected water, it is hard to beat. It suits couples, families, and small groups who want a real sail without a big, crowded boat.

Now, the captain. Every captained rental comes with a captain licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard, and most have decades on these bays. Here is the part people like most. You decide how involved you want to be. Want to sit back with your group and take in the view? Your captain does it all. Want to learn? Take the helm, trim the sails, and your captain coaches you the whole way. It is a relaxed way to pick up real skills, with an expert right beside you. So where will you go?

It depends on your time on the water. In a half day, you can sail the calm water around Shelter Island or follow the North Haven shoreline. A full day reaches Peconic Bay and the wider Twin Forks. Along the way you might pass Cedar Point Lighthouse in Northwest Harbor or the wooded edge of Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island. Your captain can also point out local spots worth a look, from quiet anchorages to the lighthouses that dot the bay. Because you stay on sheltered bays, the ride is calm and scenic, with none of the open-ocean swell.

What is included?

You get the boat, your USCG-licensed captain, and life jackets and safety gear. Bring sunscreen, a hat, water, and soft-soled shoes for the deck. We sail out of the Yacht Hampton Boating Center at 51 Pine Neck Avenue in Sag Harbor, from mid-May through the end of September. Prefer to skipper the boat yourself? You can also rent the Ensign without a captain if you qualify.

Some tips to make your day more enjoyable

  • Put your sunscreen on before getting to the boat. (Today’s modern products have a tendency to oxidize upon contact with the boat’s fiberglass surfaces.)
  • Bring a favorite snack and beverage but leave the red wine and any drink/food that will stain the deck, at home.
  • Wear shades, a cap and bring a windbreaker.
  • Wear closed toe shoes with light colored soles.
  • Be ready to have the time of your life!

Book anytime, you choose! Flexible scheduling. Let us know your perfect departure time.

12:30pm – 3:30pm

7 days a week all year long.

On weekends due to the high demand, we try to depart at these times if they work for you.  On weekdays, we will have more flexibility with start times.  Please ask if you have a “perfect time” that works for you.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled time to go over the boat and get loaded.

Arriving 15 mins later than the scheduled time will be considered a no-show and the reservation will be canceled without a refund.

Please Note: We generally depart and bring you back to the same spot/dock. If you wish to stay at a certain locale and get a pickup later, please ask. If you wish to stay longer at a destination, we can always drop you off anywhere and you can take an Uber or Taxi back to your car or home.

Policies

Deposits

Full payment is due at booking. Dates/times can be changed when you notify us in writing of your request >90 days before sailing date. If booking in January, February or March we allow 50% deposit these months. Kindly text any request at time of booking.

Weather & Cancellations

We have a no-rain and small craft advisory policy so we do not set sail if it is currently raining or rain is imminent in the forecast. We also obviously care about your safety, so we will not set sail in inclement weather and during any small craft advisory. We will generally make those decisions 2-hours before sailing time. If our captain decides not to set sail that day, due to rain or if a small craft advisory is in effect, you will have the option to receive a rain date for a period of 28 months. This allows you 3 summer seasons to reschedule. We will apply your payment and you will receive that credit to sail again within the next 28 months.

Once a client books a boat we notify all subsequent inquiries that “the boat is taken and unavailable”. For this reason we do not offer any refund on cancellations. If you cancel a reservation up to 90 days before your sail date, we do allow a no-cost change of date. Inclement weather as stated above is the sole reason for any cancellation.

Cleaning Fees

Any vessel returned that requires additional clean up will be charged $50.00.

Late Fees

Any vessel returning to dock after the agreed upon return time will be charged $75 and charged $75 again for every hour thereafter.
