Private Sailing Lessons in the Hamptons
Some people thrive with a group around them. Others want the instructor’s full attention, the freedom to ask every question, and a pace set by them alone. If that’s you, our private sailing lessons in the Hamptons are built for exactly that. At Sag Harbor Sailing, you get a sailing instructor licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard focused on you and up to three guests, out on a 23-foot Pearson Ensign in the calm waters off Sag Harbor. Whether you’ve never held a tiller or you’re shaking the rust off old skills, you’ll spend the whole session actually sailing, not watching someone else do it.
A Lesson Built Around You
In one-on-one sessions, you set the agenda. Want to spend the whole time on docking? We can do that. Nervous about heeling over in a breeze? We’ll ease into it. Prepping for an ASA test? We’ll drill the skills you’ll be graded on.
Our sailing instructors are licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard, and most have more than 20 years on the water. They teach in plain language and stay right beside you the whole time. Because the group is small, there’s no waiting your turn. You’re on the helm, trimming sails, and getting feedback as you go.
A lot of people find one-on-one time more useful than a group setting. Beginners aren’t self-conscious in front of strangers. Returning sailors can target the exact skills that feel rusty. And younger sailors tend to focus better without the distraction of a crowd. Whatever brings you aboard in the Hamptons, the lesson bends to fit you.
Lessons sail out of Sag Harbor into the calm back bays of the East End. The protected water and steady wind make it an easier place to learn than the open ocean, and the scenery doesn’t hurt either. You’ll practice your tacks with Shelter Island and the North Haven shoreline in view.
What You'll Learn
Sailing has its own language and its own muscle memory, and a focused session is a fast way to pick up both. Depending on your level, your time on the water can cover:
- The parts of the boat and how they work together.
- Reading the wind and choosing your points of sail.
- Steering, tacking, and jibing with confidence.
- Trimming the sails for speed and control.
- Docking, mooring, and safe crew habits.
Beginners usually leave their first time out having steered the boat and sailed a few legs on their own. By the end of a few sessions, most students can rig the boat, leave the dock, sail a course, and bring it back in. More experienced sailors use the time to sharpen specific skills or prepare for certification. If your goal is the ASA certification course, some one-on-one coaching first is a good way to build confidence.
We teach on our 23-foot Pearson Ensigns, classic keelboats that are stable and forgiving. They’re a good boat to learn on, and they respond clearly, so you can feel what each adjustment does. Many students are surprised by how quickly it starts to click.

How a Private Lesson Works
Booking is simple. Sessions run in Sag Harbor three times a day, and each one is about three hours on the water. There are morning, midday, and late-afternoon slots, so you can pick what fits your day. Lessons take up to four students, so you can come solo for true one-on-one coaching or bring up to three friends or family.
The season runs from mid-May through the end of September. You can book online, and we recommend reserving ahead, since summer dates fill quickly. The boat is yours for the full session, so there’s no sharing it with strangers and no rushing.
A couple of things are worth knowing before you book. If you reserve in January, February, or March, you can hold your spot with a 50% deposit. We also don’t sail in rain or during a small craft advisory. If the captain has to call off a session for weather, your payment becomes a rain-date credit that’s good for 28 months, which gives you three summer seasons to use it. We provide the boat and life jackets, so you only need to bring sunscreen, water, and shoes you don’t mind getting wet.
Who Private Lessons Are For
Lessons suit a lot of different people. First-timers like learning without a crowd watching. Couples and families often book together so they can learn at their own pace. Sailors getting back into it after years away use the time to knock off the rust. Students preparing for an ASA test drill the exact skills they’ll be graded on. Kids and teens tend to focus better one-on-one. And visitors on a tight schedule can make the most of a single session out on the Hamptons water.
You don’t need any experience, and you don’t need your own gear or boat. You just need to want to learn. If you’re not sure whether one-on-one coaching or a group lesson at our sailing school is the better fit, call us and we’ll help you decide. Once you’ve got the basics down, you can always rent a boat and head out on your own.
Policies
Deposits
Full payment is due at booking. Dates/times can be changed when you notify us in writing of your request >90 days before sailing date. If booking in January, February or March we allow 50% deposit these months. Kindly text any request at time of booking.
Weather & Cancellations
We have a no-rain and small craft advisory policy so we do not set sail if it is currently raining or rain is imminent in the forecast. We also obviously care about your safety, so we will not set sail in inclement weather and during any small craft advisory. We will generally make those decisions 2-hours before sailing time. If our captain decides not to set sail that day, due to rain or if a small craft advisory is in effect, you will have the option to receive a rain date for a period of 28 months. This allows you 3 summer seasons to reschedule. We will apply your payment and you will receive that credit to sail again within the next 28 months.
Once a client books a boat we notify all subsequent inquiries that “the boat is taken and unavailable”. For this reason we do not offer any refund on cancellations. If you cancel a reservation up to 90 days before your sail date, we do allow a no-cost change of date. Inclement weather as stated above is the sole reason for any cancellation.

FAQs
-
How long is a lesson?
Each lesson is about three hours on the water. We run three a day in Sag Harbor: a morning slot, a midday slot, and a late-afternoon slot. You pick the one that fits your schedule.
-
Do I need any experience to start?
No. Lessons are open to all levels, including people who have never sailed. Your instructor starts wherever you are and stays with you the whole time. You don’t need to bring anything but yourself.
-
How many people can join a lesson?
Up to four. Book solo for true one-on-one coaching, or bring up to three friends or family and learn together. Either way, the lesson is built around your group.
-
Can a private lesson help me prepare for ASA certification?
Yes. Many students take a session or two before their ASA course to build confidence and get comfortable on the boat. It’s a good way to walk into the test prepared.
-
What happens if the weather is bad on my lesson day?
We don’t sail in rain or during a small craft advisory, and we usually make that call about two hours before your start time. If we cancel for weather, your payment becomes a rain-date credit good for 28 months, so you can rebook within three summer seasons.
