Sailing Charters & Day Sails in the Hamptons
A sailing charter in the Hamptons doesn’t have to mean a giant party yacht or a four-figure bill. Sometimes the day you remember most is the quiet one: a classic sailboat, a small group, and a few hours of wind and open water. That’s what we do at Sag Harbor Sailing. Our Hamptons sailing charters take you out on a 23-foot Pearson Ensign, with a licensed captain at the helm or with you skippering yourself. Whether it’s a half-day escape or a full day on the bay, you get a real sailing experience, not a crowded booze cruise. Just you, your group of up to six, and the East End from the water.
A charter works for all kinds of days. Couples book a relaxed afternoon. Families bring the kids out for their first time under sail. Visitors get a look at the Hamptons that most people never see. However you spend it, it’s a calm, screen-free few hours on the bay.
Types of Charters
Our charters come in a few simple shapes, so you can pick the kind of day you want.
Day Sail w/ Captain
A captained day sail is the easiest option. A USCG-licensed captain handles the boat while you relax, take in the scenery, and sail without any of the work. It’s great for first-timers, families, and anyone who just wants to enjoy the ride. You can take a turn at the helm if you’d like, or sit back the whole time.
Half-Day Charter
A half-day charter is a few hours on the water. That’s usually enough to sail out, find a quiet spot, maybe swim or just drift, and come back relaxed. It’s a good fit for a morning or an afternoon.
Full-Day Charter
A full-day charter is for when you want to range farther, linger longer, and really settle into the rhythm of the water. It’s the better pick if you’d like to reach Montauk or spend the whole day out.
Custom Cruising w/o Captain
If you’d rather skipper yourself, ask us about a self-skippered, bareboat charter, available half-day or full-day. You set your own course around the bay. We’ll go over what’s needed to take the boat out on your own when you reach out.
Whatever you choose, you’re on the same 23-foot Pearson Ensign. What changes is how long you’re out and who’s at the helm.
The Boat and Your Captain
Our charters sail on the 23-foot Pearson Ensign, a classic keelboat that seats up to six. It’s stable, roomy, and a genuine joy to sail. These aren’t motor yachts or party boats. They’re real sailboats, the kind you feel the wind in.
Our captains are licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard and have spent decades on these waters. They know where the wind is good, where the views are best, and which quiet corners are worth the trip.
If you’re new to sailing, they’ll happily explain what they’re doing and let you try the helm. If you’re experienced, they’ll trim for speed and let you enjoy the sail.
We’ve been sailing out of Sag Harbor since 1997, and we’re an ASA-accredited sailing school. So the people taking you out genuinely know how to sail, and how to teach it. Because the boat is small, the day feels personal. You’re not one of forty people on a big deck; it’s just your group and the captain.
Where You'll Sail
Most charters stay in the calm, protected bays around Sag Harbor, on the East End of Long Island. You’ll sail past Shelter Island and the North Haven shoreline, with the historic Sag Harbor waterfront behind you. The water here is gentler than the open ocean, which makes for an easy, scenic day.
On a full-day charter, there’s time to range a little farther. Trips toward Montauk are an option for those who want a longer sail east. Wherever you go, you’re on some of the prettiest water in the region, the same bays that have drawn sailors to the Hamptons for generations.
A charter is also a great way to see this stretch of coast the way it’s meant to be seen: slowly, from the deck of a sailboat, with no traffic and no rush.
Policies
Deposits
Full payment is due at booking. Dates/times can be changed when you notify us in writing of your request >90 days before sailing date. If booking in January, February or March we allow 50% deposit these months. Kindly text any request at time of booking.
Weather & Cancellations
We have a no-rain and small craft advisory policy so we do not set sail if it is currently raining or rain is imminent in the forecast. We also obviously care about your safety, so we will not set sail in inclement weather and during any small craft advisory. We will generally make those decisions 2-hours before sailing time. If our captain decides not to set sail that day, due to rain or if a small craft advisory is in effect, you will have the option to receive a rain date for a period of 28 months. This allows you 3 summer seasons to reschedule. We will apply your payment and you will receive that credit to sail again within the next 28 months.
Once a client books a boat we notify all subsequent inquiries that “the boat is taken and unavailable”. For this reason we do not offer any refund on cancellations. If you cancel a reservation up to 90 days before your sail date, we do allow a no-cost change of date. Inclement weather as stated above is the sole reason for any cancellation.

Cleaning Fees
Any vessel returned that requires additional clean up will be charged $50.00.
Late Fees
Any vessel returning to dock after the agreed upon return time will be charged $75 and charged $75 again for every hour thereafter.
How to Book a Charter
Booking is easy. Most charters can be reserved online, and you pick your date and how long you’d like to be out. If you’d like a captain, choose a captained sail. If you’d rather skipper yourself, start from our sailboat rentals page.
Charters run through the warmer months, and summer weekends fill up fast, so it’s worth booking ahead. We take cash, cards, and mobile payments.
If the weather doesn’t cooperate and we can’t sail, your booking earns a rain-date credit good for 28 months. And if you expect to sail more than a few times a season, our Commodores Club can save you money on every trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
How long is a charter?
You can book a half-day or a full-day charter. A half-day is a few hours on the water, while a full-day gives you time to range farther and linger. Tell us what you’re hoping for and we’ll suggest the right length.
-
Do I need to know how to sail?
No, not for a captained sail. A USCG-licensed captain does the sailing while you relax, and you’re welcome to take the helm if you want to. If you’d like to skipper yourself on a bareboat charter, reach out and we’ll go over what’s involved.
-
How many people can come on a charter?
Up to six. The 23-foot Pearson Ensign comfortably seats six, which suits a couple, a family, or a small group of friends. It’s an intimate day on the water, not a crowded party boat.
-
What should I bring, and what's provided?
We provide the boat and life jackets. You just bring sunscreen, water, a light layer in case it’s breezy, and shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Leave anything that might stain the deck at home.
-
What happens if the weather is bad?
We don’t sail in rain or during a small craft advisory, and we usually make that call about two hours ahead. If we cancel for weather, your payment becomes a rain-date credit good for 28 months, so you can rebook within three summer seasons.
