The shore lines of Long Island are home to some of the world’s most prestigious residences and natural beauty. Enjoy sailing aboard a 23′ keelboat with an outboard engine and room for up to six passengers. Plus, if needed, you have the option of adding one of our captains to operate your Sag Harbor Sailing boat rental.

Ready for a Pearson Ensign bareboat rental, just you and the boat? If you can handle a keelboat on your own, the 23-foot Pearson Ensign is a great one to take out solo. It is stable, simple to rig, and forgiving in a breeze. You launch from our dock at 51 Pine Neck Avenue, point the bow toward open water, and the calm East End bays are yours for the day. No captain, no fixed plan, just you and the wind.

Sailing Her Yourself

The Ensign was built as a one-design daysailer, so the controls are simple and close at hand. You steer with a tiller, not a wheel, which gives you a direct feel for the boat.

The rig is an easy two-sail setup, a mainsail and a small jib, so there is not much to juggle. A small outboard motor gets you in and out of the harbor. After that, it is all sail.

In a stiffer breeze, you can shorten sail to keep things comfortable. In lighter air, the boat still ghosts along nicely.

What Makes the Ensign Manageable Solo?

Stability, mostly. It has a full keel with about 1,200 pounds of ballast, so it stands up to a gust instead of tipping you around. The cockpit is one of the largest for a boat this size, which gives you room to move as you tack and trim.

At around 3,000 pounds, it feels solid underfoot but still responds nicely in light air. Plenty of sailors single-hand the Ensign with no trouble. You can also bring a small crew, since it seats up to six and has a head in the cabin.

How to Qualify

To rent without a captain, you need to handle the boat on your own, from leaving the dock to bringing her back in. We confirm you are comfortable with a short, friendly check before your first solo trip.

If you want the full rundown on the requirements, see our bareboat rental details and qualifying. Not quite there yet? A lesson or a captained trip is an easy way to bridge the gap.

Tips to Make Your First Trip Smoother

If it's been a while since you sailed, brushing up on the basics would be ideal. Check the wind forecast before you go, and start with a half day if you are easing back in. Rig the boat at the dock while it is calm.

Once you are out, take it slow and let the keel do its work. The Ensign rewards a light, patient touch.

Where Can You Take Her?

On a half day, you can sail the calm water around Shelter Island or follow the North Haven shoreline at your own pace. A full day opens up Peconic Bay and the wider Twin Forks.

You might glide past Cedar Point Lighthouse in Northwest Harbor or the quiet shore of Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island.

Since you stay on protected bays, the water is calmer than the open Sound or ocean. That makes a solo day a lot less tiring, and a lot more fun.

The Launch is Part of the Appeal

You drive right to the dock, park for the day or overnight, and step aboard. We have the boat fueled and ready, and a short walk-through covers the gear and the day's conditions.

Then you cast off on your own schedule. When you are done, you bring her back to the same dock. It is about as simple as self-skippering in the Hamptons gets.

  • Wear shades, a cap and bring a windbreaker.
  • Wear closed toe shoes with light colored soles.

Policies

Deposits

Full payment is due at booking. Dates/times can be changed when you notify us in writing of your request >90 days before sailing date. If booking in January, February or March we allow 50% deposit these months. Kindly text any request at time of booking.

Weather & Cancellations

We have a no-rain and small craft advisory policy so we do not set sail if it is currently raining or rain is imminent in the forecast. We also obviously care about your safety, so we will not set sail in inclement weather and during any small craft advisory. We will generally make those decisions 2-hours before sailing time. If our captain decides not to set sail that day, due to rain or if a small craft advisory is in effect, you will have the option to receive a rain date for a period of 28 months. This allows you 3 summer seasons to reschedule. We will apply your payment and you will receive that credit to sail again within the next 28 months.

Once a client books a boat we notify all subsequent inquiries that “the boat is taken and unavailable”. For this reason we do not offer any refund on cancellations. If you cancel a reservation up to 90 days before your sail date, we do allow a no-cost change of date. Inclement weather as stated above is the sole reason for any cancellation.
