Want a morning sailboat rental in Sag Harbor, before the day gets busy?

Mornings are our quiet secret. The water is calm, the wind is light and steady, and the bay is nearly empty.

You can grab a coffee in the village, cast off, and have the East End almost to yourself. It is the gentlest, prettiest time to be on the water, and a great way to start a Hamptons day.

Self-Skipper Rentals ▸

So why sail in the morning here?

It comes down to local conditions. On the East End bays, the wind is usually lightest and steadiest early in the day. The strong afternoon sea breeze has not filled in yet, so the water stays flat and easy.

That calm makes morning the friendliest time for beginners, families, and anyone who wants a relaxed sail. The light is softer too, which is lovely for photos. And you beat the afternoon crowd of powerboats and day-trippers, so the bay feels wide open.

Here is what you sail.

You take out a 23-foot Pearson Ensign, the same stable keelboat we use for lessons and charters. It seats up to six people and has a head on board.

You can go with a USCG-licensed captain, or skipper it yourself if you qualify. With a captain, you can relax or learn as you go. On your own, the calm morning water is a forgiving place to sail solo.

When do morning rentals run?

Start times are flexible and set when you book, since the best window can shift with the tide and the weather. Tell us what you have in mind and we will lock in a time that works.

A morning rental usually has you back at the dock by lunch, which leaves the rest of the day free for the beach, the village, or a nap. Call (631) 725-5100 to set your morning slot.

Where can a morning take you?

On calm early water, you can cover a lot in a few hours. Sail the sheltered water around Shelter Island, drift along the North Haven shoreline, or poke into Northwest Harbor.

You might pass Cedar Point Lighthouse with the morning sun behind it, or watch the shore of Mashomack Preserve slide by in the quiet. Your captain, or your own plan, sets the route around the wind. You stay on protected bays the whole way, so the ride is smooth.

Mornings suit a lot of people.

New sailors like the calm. Families with kids like the gentle start and the early finish. Photographers like the light. And experienced sailors like having the bay to themselves before the breeze and the boat traffic build. Whatever brings you out early, the morning rewards it.

A little planning makes the day even better.

Layer up, since it can be cool on the water early before it warms fast. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. We have the boat fueled and ready when you arrive, so you can be sailing within minutes of stepping on the dock.

Some tips to make your day more enjoyable

  • Put your sunscreen on before getting to the boat. (Today’s modern products have a tendency to oxidize upon contact with the boat’s fiberglass surfaces.)
  • Bring a favorite snack and beverage but leave the red wine and any drink/food that will stain the deck, at home.
  • Wear shades, a cap and bring a windbreaker.
  • Wear closed toe shoes with light colored soles.
  • Be ready to have the time of your life!

Policies

Deposits

Full payment is due at booking. Dates/times can be changed when you notify us in writing of your request >90 days before sailing date. If booking in January, February or March we allow 50% deposit these months. Kindly text any request at time of booking.

Weather & Cancellations

We have a no-rain and small craft advisory policy so we do not set sail if it is currently raining or rain is imminent in the forecast. We also obviously care about your safety, so we will not set sail in inclement weather and during any small craft advisory. We will generally make those decisions 2-hours before sailing time. If our captain decides not to set sail that day, due to rain or if a small craft advisory is in effect, you will have the option to receive a rain date for a period of 28 months. This allows you 3 summer seasons to reschedule. We will apply your payment and you will receive that credit to sail again within the next 28 months.

Once a client books a boat we notify all subsequent inquiries that “the boat is taken and unavailable”. For this reason we do not offer any refund on cancellations. If you cancel a reservation up to 90 days before your sail date, we do allow a no-cost change of date. Inclement weather as stated above is the sole reason for any cancellation.
